The Sound of Love

Written by Sugar & Spice guest writer:  Zorinah Burrell

The most important day of your life is quickly approaching, and you want to carefully craft every component and detail to create a magical scene that you will be able to cherish for the rest of your life.

Music is one of the most powerful tools we can employ to set the mood on our wedding day. By choosing the perfect wedding song as you walk down the aisle, you are setting an expectation in regards to the theme for the rest of the day.

Music has a way of tugging at people’s heart strings and painting a picture. Think about what you most want to reflect; the message you want to portray as well as the style you are aiming for.

I remember my own wedding day and what a disaster the walk down the aisle was. My husband had asked if his Father could play the organ for my entrance into the Church and my walk down the aisle. One of my best friends had offered to sing along with him, (he was a musician). At the time, I had agreed to all of this as I was suffering from ‘brides brain’, (the condition of having way too much to organise in a short space of time). I had not taken into consideration the ageing memory of my groom’s father- nor his penchant for the lime-light. Consequently, my guests were treated to a musical comedy. The key was changed approximately four times at random, and my poor friend ended up in fits of laughter, while trying to follow the impossible show tune my Father in law had decided to ‘gift us’. It was pretty difficult to come back from that, to be honest, the whole service went downhill from there, and I ended up feeling disappointed and unsettled through most of the ceremony.

For this reason, whatever scene you are trying to set, (and I’m sure it will differ from the one I ended up with); I strongly urge you to consider your musical choices wisely. Make sure you chose music that means something to you both and take some time in the planning process. After all, music will impact your day and doesn’t need to cost you much more than your time, so grab a cuppa, sit back and feel free to have a listen to some of our suggestions.

Some of these songs are only suitable in certain parts- but you may find that you don’t need an entire song to walk down the aisle, that’s where a little bit of planning will come in- I can guarantee they will work more magic on your wedding day than that old church organ did for me!
