If you’re looking to get engaged, your perfect moment might be mere days away. It turns out that the holiday season is one of the most popular times for proposing, with over 30 percent of engagements happening in November and December. No one’s quite sure what it is about Christmastime that makes people want to get engaged, but we’re willing to be that the time spent with loved ones, gift-giving traditions, and excitement about the coming New Year have something to do with it.
However, proposing during the holidays can be a risky business – if you’re not prepared. Here are a few tips to help you make your proposal memorable, magical, and one she can’t refuse:
Use The Seasonal Beauty. Christmastime means summer here in Australia, so the day you pop the question will likely be sunny, warm and beautiful. Take advantage of this! Propose outdoors, surrounded by a gorgeous view. Whether you ask in the arvo or wait for a stunning sunset, an outdoor proposal will certainly be an experience she won’t soon forget.
Have Someone Photograph The Moment. Asking a girl to marry you is one of those things you only do once (here’s hoping). Make sure that someone is there to capture the moment for posterity. If you know a photographer, ask him or her to be nearby, snapping away during the proposal. Trust us, you’ll want to show your friends the look on her face.
Plan A Celebration. The proposal doesn’t end after she says “yes;” it’s important that you’ve got something planned to celebrate this new chapter in your relationship. Think about what she likes to do, and have something in mind for the rest of the day. If she’s a party animal, plan a surprise party with all your closest friends back at your flat. If she’s a quiet type, consider a nice dinner – just the two of you. Whatever you choose, be sure that you have time to soak in this wonderful moment in your lives.
Propose in Front of People. Admittedly, this is more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. If you’re absolutely certain that she accept your proposal, and you know that she’d be happy with the spotlight, go ahead and propose in front of family and friends.
However, if you aren’t sure what her answer will be, do you really want to risk getting turned down in front of your mum? Also, if she’s not a girl who likes a lot of attention, a public proposal can be heaps uncomfortable. It’s best to get engaged in private, and then celebrate with everyone later on.
Hide The Ring. Honestly, we shouldn’t have to tell you why this is a bad idea. How many movies or TV shows have depicted someone eating a cake with the ring baked inside or swallowing it while drinking champagne? How many times has a dog eaten the ring, or has someone moved it from its hiding place by mistake? Not only is the hidden ring trick a cliche, it’s a great way to accidentally lose one expensive piece of jewelry. Just don’t do it.
Be Afraid! The most important part of any proposal is the girl you’re asking to marry you. Whatever your plans are, stay relaxed and remember why you’re proposing in the first place. You love her, she loves you, and you’re both about to begin an amazing new part of your relationship. That fact alone makes any proposal the perfect one.
