To cocktail or not to cocktail....that is the question....

Now, it's no secret that I'm a "big white wedding" kind of girl.  I love a wedding to be treated formally with all the tradition and glamour you would expect from a royal celebration.  However, after writing this blog I may have been convereted just a little bit!  If you're not into tradition, and want a great party that can be enjoyed by your guests, a cocktail reception is a good way to go.

Cocktail receptions can be super stylish if done correctly and decor wise, are an opportunity to utilise some gorgeous furniture that you would not usually need for a sit down dinner.  If styled and planned correctly so that there is something frequently happening, they can turn into a rockin' party.  Your guests also get a chance to mingle more easily with each other.

Typically they run shorter than a formal reception, but this is of course up to you.  I love the idea of a cocktail party being held at a gorgoeus property that starts in the late afternoon and burns on into the wee hours.  One thing you do need to be aware of is that while catering is generally cheaper, alcohol can be a more hefty bill as the focus is on drinking, dancing and socialising.  Cocktail parties give you the opportunity to be really creative with catering...so don't go for the norm...be adventurous!

If you are really looking for a way to make the party ROCK - consider specialty entertainment such as fire performers and costumed characters who will break the ice and encourage conversation.  Check ot the below AMAZING options - The Champers Parlour, Chic Shelves and Roaming Feast.  With a standard reception there are things constantly happening...entree, main, desert, cutting of the cake, speeches, bridal waltz etc.  To keep the flow of the night it's important to have things "happen" so the party doesn't fade out.
